I first encountered reformer Pilates in 2008 and was immediately struck by how anatomically correct and intelligent the method is. As a physiotherapist, I recognized the therapeutic potential, giving people the opportunity to understand how the body was built to move, and how to access the core muscles to support and stabilize movement, which ultimately results in injury prevention. I am a licensed physiotherapist and continue to work part time in that role. I followed the full Pilates curriculum 2010-2012 with Merrithew STOTT Pilates out of Toronto, Canada, one of the world leading schools and manufacturers of equipment. This includes Mat, Reformer, Stability chair, Tower/Cadillac, and Barrels. I continue to regard Pilates as an amazing addition to any physical fitness regime; providing concepts that are essential to all fitness forms–stabilizing and supporting mobility from core activation. While the equipment is specialized, the concepts are transferable to all forms of movement. When instructing Pilates, I like to educate clients about how our body was built to move, how small details make it easier to access key stabilizing muscles, and that Pilates is accessible at every age, body shape, and fitness level.
